The aim of the Mapping of Integrated Watershed Management, Disaster Risk Reduction and Natural Resources Management initiatives / institutions in Tajikistan is to provide information base for a better knowledge management and coordination in the IWM sector (integrated watershed management: disaster risk reduction, land use and natural resource management considering climate change adaptation and the livelihood perspective) among governmental, civil society and international stakeholders in Tajikistan.

Background information

 

Currently a lot of initiatives/actors are active in the field of disaster risk reduction and natural resources management in Tajikistan; however there is lack of an overview. A lot of work is done in parallel; knowledge management in the sector is yet to be improved. Therefore for coordination of the SCO Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Platform the Swiss Disaster Risk Reduction Programme requested the Centre for Climate Change and Disaster Reduction (CCDR) for mapping of initiatives / institutions in the field of Disaster Risk Reduction / Natural Resources Management in order to identify “who is doing what”.

 

The main objective of this initiativeis to provide information base for a better knowledge management and coordination in the IWM sector (integrated watershed management: disaster risk reduction, land use and natural resource management considering climate change adaptation and the livelihood perspective) among governmental, civil society and international stakeholders in Tajikistan through:

 

Mapping of Integrated Watershed Management initiatives / institutions:

o Relevant governmental institutions

o Relevant scientific institutions

o Relevant reforms and change in legislation

o International stakeholder (bi- and multilateral donors, international NGO’s)

o Initiatives and programs ongoing

o Trainings available in the country

o Local NGO’s, consultant companies and networks

 

The mapping for every institution / initiative includes the following information:

o Legal status

o ToR’s / mandate

o Ongoing projects and work: basic info

*Once the present mapping was completed, two additional projects have been launched and functioning ever since, thus not included in the overall data base. These are:

“Natural Disaster Risk Reduction and Integrated Watershed Management in Muminabad” - project

- Phase I

- Implemented by CARITAS Switzerland

- Duration: from September 1, 2011 to May 31, 2014

- Implementation area: Muminabad of Khatlon region

- Overall budget: CHF 998’330

- Financed by SDC (100%)

“Remote Geo-Hazards Capacity Building and Monitoring” – project

- Phase II

- Implemented by FOCUS Humanitarian, sub-implementers are Welthungerhilfer (WHH) and MSDSP

- Duration: from October 1, 2011 to September 30, 2013

- Implementation area: Zarafshan, Jirgital and GBAO

- Overall budget: CHF 1’852’964

- Financed by: DFID – (43.5%), SDC – (42.9 %), FOCUS/AKDN/WHH – (13.7 %)
